Gamut P40 - Long Term Test

It seems like there's heaps of chain guides fighting it out at the moment... Which 'aint a bad thing as the quality of them all is going through the roof.

Here's Gamut USA's latest offering, the 'P40'. Straight out of the box it's amazingly light (254grams) and looks beautifully neat and simple.

It's made up of a 10mm thick polycarbonate (plasticy) bashring to keep your ring safe (122g) and a 5mm thick alu back plate with poly top and bottom guides to keep your chain in place (132g). It's designed for 36 - 40 tooth chain rings and is available in pretty much every option of colour, mounting and crank arm you'll ever need. If it doesn't quite fit the bill there's another 4 guides in Gamut's range.

We'll be giving the P40 a thrashing over the next few months and letting you know how it copes. Look out for a first repo in Wideopen issue 7 and long term tests from then on...

Animal Bike Range out now

Animal must be pretty chuffed with themselves at the moment... They've got two World Champions (Rach and Gee Atherton) on the team and they've just launched a whole new range of mtb specific clothing.

We checked out the kit at Madison's Icebike show earlier this year and it looks great. Really well thought out, really tough and really stylish. Plus there's not many ranges that have been developed with the help of 2 world champs!

Here's a couple of screen grabs... With any luck we'll be bringing you a full report in the near future.

If you want to get your hands on some kit... pop down to your local Animal store or order from your local bike shop, Madison are the distributor.

Check out the full range at Animal.co.uk

Aberfeldy SDA

What a weekend. The track on Friday was just some tape between the trees where some branches had been cleared. No lines, no corners, just loose dusty trails and a good measure of rocks thrown in as well.
By Sunday afternoon there was a proper track, and Mr Joe Barnes showed us all why he has the number one plate, taking the win by over 4 seconds!
Check out the next issue of wideopen for a full report on what the track was like and who done well for themselves.

Picture of the man himself kindly provided by Torks @ torks.co.uk. Check out his site for a load more pictures from the weekends.

The Uprising

I happened to stumble across this film quite a while ago now, but since then I've managed to meet up with the guy behind it all Callum Swift. So rather than having me try to tell you what it's all about I thought I'd leave it to the man himself.... The Uprising is a film due out later this year about the future of downhill. It features the worlds best young riders doing what they love both at home and at the races, and whether they are the world champion or an unknown local they all share a love for bikes and the ability to go damm fast on them! Filmed in the UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Switzerland, Andorra, Italy, Slovenia and South Africa and featuring the likes of Bryceland, Cammelini, Cunningham, Hart, Fairclough, Simmonds, Reid, Dale and Smith its packed with more flat out riding than you can cope with. Selected nationals, world cups and the world champs cover the racing and to keep things interesting there is mini moto at the Fairclough's, night time dirt jumping in Geneva, street in London and plenty of extras. Keep an eye on www.theuprisingfilm.com for updates and expect a trailer out in August. In the mean time here is a little teaser to keep you entertained...

[Okay I'm stuggling the embed this so here's the link instead!]

So there you have it. Still want to know more? Check out the next issue of wideopen for a short interview with Callum to find out the why, where, when and hows.

King of Dirt Rd3 Report - NASS 08

King of Dirt front man Ben just fired this repo over:

"After a funny 2 hour drive and the usual antics involved with getting into the big events we arrived in Shepton Mallet in Somerset to witness Rd 3 of the King Of Dirt.

The trails were looking good and the Weather was for once Amazing !!

With many of the big name Pro riders inc. Chris and Mike Smith , Sam Reynolds , Ricky Crompton , Rory Backshell and the Zimbo Duo Blake and Raymond Samson turning up on the saturday it gave some of the newer riders on the Pro circuit some time to practice getting through the trails and getting there new tricks down in time for the comp.

Nass has grown a good reputation for providing an incredible extreme sports show and it certainly proved that this year was to be another good event.

With Help from Nike 6.0 and the other big names in the game (Identiti, DMR, Riding High UK ) We managed to get the Prize fund up to £250 for the Winner .

The riding Kicked off at 1pm on the sunday with grey clouds floating above us which soon changed and helped to lift the riders spirit even more!

Chris Smith of GT bikes came 1st Place with a good consistency through the trails pulling 360 tailwhips, barspins, superman seat grabs .

Chris was closely followed by a new guy to the MTB dirt jump scene Danny Pace of Curtis Bikes , He impressed the crowd with massive tailwhips and off-axis flips over the last jump.

Third place went to Rory Backshell of Identiti Bikes. Rory road really well all weekend and showed the judges that he is still up there with the best of them.

The Nike Killing it award went to Sam Reynolds who the judges were really impressed with but due to an unfortunate crash meant he could not continue the comp.
Big shout outs have to go to Mike Smith , Sam Reynolds, Billy Bob and any others that hurt themselves and didn't manage to finish the comp.

The next round is at The Track on August 9th."

Pearce Cycles Summer Series: Rhyd Y Felin

Barely recovered from the weekend at Fort Bill, I jumped in the car and missioned up to North Wales for Pearce Rd4 race at Rhyd Y Felin. Rhyd recently featured in the 'Seasons' Steve Peat section and the infamous Athertons' Farmer Jack flick (see here). It's also renound for being one of the best tracks in the bloomin country, proven by the fact that the race entries sold out in about 8 hours!

The track was bone dry, loose and dusty with big balls and no brakes needed to do well. Up top it's FAST, FAST, FAST and open... Then lower down it gets into some really fun, rooty woods with loads of lines to choose from. There's no point say who was looking fast, cos pretty much everyone was flying whether they liked it or not. James Hughes and the Morgan's stood out with some ballsy lines and balls out attacking of the last section....

There'll be a full repo in Wideopen 7 - but you can check out the full results
here. Fastest on the day was James Hughes, sporting fresh MTB-Direct, Electric Kit! Fastest lady was Emily Horridge. Nice work.

Cheers to Pearce Cycles and everyone else for another great weekend of racing at a great venue...

Fort William: DH Final Results

Holy Shit! It's been an amazing day of racing at Fort Bill!

Tracey Moseley was the last woman on the mountain and came storming down the final motorway section to a screaming crowd. She kicked Sabrina clean out of the hot seat by a clean 5 seconds and took Gold for the women. She has dominated ALL weekend - she was fastest in timed practice, fastest in quali's and fastest in the finals. 100% pinned all weekend!

Top 5:

Tracey Moseley 5:20:87
Sabrina Jonnier 5:25:01
Rachel Atherton 5:26:76
Mio Suemasa 5:35:64
Melissa Buhl 5:45:19

The mens final was probably the most exciting race i've ever witnessed. Tons of changes in the hotseat, loads of UK riders putting in top results, no handers from Gracia, punctures all over the place. With the last few riders to go Rennie stormed into the finish and took the hotspot, Cathro came down into 3rd place, Barel punctured and Peaty hammered down behind him into first place. With only 3 riders left on the hill Steve was looking tense... Hill came down into 5th and Gee into 2nd. Only Minaar left on the hill and the crowd were going absolutely bloody BONKERS. He crossed the line with a 4:43:52 and into the top spot. Gold for Minaar, Silver for Gee, Bronze for Steve. Dominance for the Syndicate!

Top 5:

Greg 4:43:53
Gee 4:46:69
Steve 4:47:42
Rennie 4:48:19
Hill 4:48:70

Fionn Griffiths5:46:87
Kathleen Pruitt 5:47:38
Claire Buchar 5:50:29

Fort Bill: Saturday DH Practice

Today was more DH practice, sunshine and energy drink....

Most of the riders were taking easy, throwing some style over the jumps and not pushing themselves too hard. Except for Adam Brayton who is 100% 'avin it every inch of the track and whipping every jump!

The sun's out so the track is mega dry and blown out, loads of loose turns and washing out everywhere... and LOADS of punctures all over the place.

Here's a few shots from today courtesy of Wideopen supersnapper Milky... Stay locked on for some video interviews with the riders when Mono sorts out the IT problems...

Tomorrow is DH qualification and finals, starting 11AM.

Fort Bill: Friday - DH Practice and 4X Finals

Greetings from sunny Fort Bill! Today was DH practice and 4X Finals....

DH saw most of the fast guys rolling a few runs... but generally taking it pretty easy. Most of the riders were turning on the style on the jumps and relaxing rather than fully pinning it...

Style for miles from Minaar and Danny Hart, whipping it out over the jumps. Perv award goes to the Mojo Team in full rubber speed suits that they reckon were knocking a full 60 seconds off their times! Minaar clocked the fastest practice time for the guys, with Tracey Moseley for the girls.

This evening was 4X finals and some top racing. Jana Horakova took gold for the girls and Jared Graves for the guys. Dan Athey got a slow start and came in third...

Athy
Prokop

Day 1 - First Practice

Things are going well so far in Fort Bill, first practice went off today without a hitch in the dusty conditions. Everyone is saying how loose it is. Apparently there's been 1 day a week of rain for the last 2 months! It's hard to say who's looking fast at such an early stage, most people are cruising down checking out a few new lines that have been taped in for this year, including a modified middle woods section. Tom Deacon says "Wicked, I wish the woods were longer it's the best bit!"

4X practice on at the moment, Dan is looking well on top of his gates and Prokop and Graves are both here racing so it's all set for a really decent race tomorrow night. Brian Lopes of course has now retired from the 4X scene after last weekend.

All to play for really, we'll see what happens tomorrow in the 4X and see how the DH is looking after another day of practice.

Keep your eyes peeled to the site!

Count down to Fort William!

The World Cup circus is rolling into Fort William as I type and things are starting to gear up for another monster weekend of World Cup racing...

I'm not going to even try and predict any results but fingers crossed for a strong UK turn out and some more medals...

Milki and Mono are leaving the sunny south of England any second now and i'll be jumping on a train tomorrow AM. As soon as we arrive we'll be going mad to get the action onto your screens.

Stay locked on to the website throughout the weekend for anything and everything we can get over!

If you're making the epic journey up to Fort Bill, pop over and say hi.

We'll be the ones running around like nutters trying to find phone reception/charge batteries/upload photos/scribble down results all while interviewing/photoing/videoing EVERYONE in site.

See you north of the border!

UK riders DOMINATE the World Cup!!

Oh my god - What a weekend for UK mountainbike racing! An Atherton hatrick with 3 gold medals, a junior gold for Danny Hart and a Bronze for Fionn Griffiths. Proof that the UK really is the one to beat on the World MTB scene!

Saturday saw Dan Atherton destroy the 4X field with a stormer of a run. He missed the holeshot... but after about 10 pedal strokes took the lead and pinned it all the way to the finish - no contest. I don't think there's many guys out there who can out-sprint Lopes! Also, I don't think there were many riders doubling up the ENORMOUS F*in triple, let alone transferring it! Lopes, Tschugg and Pirmann were left to pick up the pieces...

There were some other great results for GB riders with Beaumont in 12th, Matt Simmonds in 22nd, Longden 23rd and Bernard Kerr 24th. Nice work to all of you! Check here for the full list of results.

Here's the men's 4X final:

The womens 4X saw ANOTHER UK podium with Fionn Griffiths taking 3rd place. Final here:

Sunday was the big one with everyone's eyes fixed pretty firmly on World Champs Sam Hill and Sabrina Jonnier.

The girls started pouring down the hill and eventually Florine Putin took the hotseat but was quickly kicked out by World Champ Sabrina Jonnier. Last girl on the hill Rach Atherton came storming out of the gate, attacking the top switch backs and pedalling hard into the open section. At the tight technical wooded section she was looking FAST as f*ck and like she might just pull of something very bloody exciting. She crossed the line with a 2.55.30, kicking Sabrina's ass by 8 SECONDS! Storming. Up in the commentary booth she was shooting the shit with Warner and joked "8 seconds aint bad, double figures would have been nice!". You can check out the ladies results here.

Here's Rach's winning run:

With Rach's win in the bag, the guys started storming down the hill. The weather was jumping between bright sun and heavy rain meaning lots of changes to the track and lots of head scratching about tyre choice. According to Gracia, spikes were the only option to get through the steep, loose wooded section.

First UK rider down was Matt Simmonds with a decent 2:48:50, with Stanny, Ben Cathro, Rowen Sorrell, Chris Hutchens and the rest of the boys steaming down. Stanny took an early seat in first place and held it for a LONG time before he was eventually knocked off the throne by Pascual Guardia and into 19th place. Danny Hart came down the hill and into junior first place, no doubt much to Milways delight who has been coaching him through Mxfitness... Helpfully the UCI monkeys were incharge of which runs were shown on the live feeds so his run never made it onto my screen... Sam Dale was looking pinned and up for a damn fine time until his front wheel washed out and he took a dive. Same story sadly for Donny and Brendan... Gutted.

Things really started to hot up as the rain started to fall and the fastest qualifying riders hammered out of the start gate. Minaar came down with a solid run and took the hot seat from Kovarik. He sat tight and held off the big guns like Peaty, Steve Smith and Barel... Greg must have been starting to sweat as second to last man down Sam "im gonna DESTROY you" Hill left the gate and pinned every turn, feet up and pedalling hard. He literally got 2 cranks in where everyone else could only get half a pedal in. At the final split, Sam was over a second up on Greg and crossed the line safely in first place. It's going to be a good season for Greg no question... but I don't think anyone doubted the Sam would kick his ass.

So... Gee had the lonely job of being last man in the start hut, with several World Cup winners and World Champs already down the mountain ahead of him. The track was churned up, loosed and wet. Of course also the added pressure of keeping up with Dan and Gee's wins. Whatever it was running through his mind it must have done some good. In the commentary booth Warner reckoned it as "poetry in motion". Gracia was screaming "Gooo one roast beeef!". He flowed the top switch backs, head up and firing out turns of the cranks everywhere he could. High line through the woods, floating over the tech rock section. 0.33 up at the final split.... And across the line to a screaming crowd, a screaming Rach, Dan and Dan Brown and a well deserved 1st place. Amazing to watch - even from hundreds of miles away on a tiny laptop screen. I can't WAIT for Fort Bill to catch this stuff up close!

Mens results here and Gee's winning run here:

MASSIVE well done to all the UK riders that got out there and put in a result. Also, of course to Stu and the boys at MTBCUT.TV.

Sunday 1 June 2008

GEEEEEEE wins at Vallnord!

It was tight as a gnats arsehole but Gee just took Gold at Vallnord, beating Sam Hill by 0.31 of a second!

That's a TRIPLE Atherton win! (Dan 4x, then Rach and Gee in the DH)

1st: Gee Atherton 2:36.35 (i think?!)
2nd: Sam Hill 2:36:66
3rd: Greg Minaar 2:36:73

I'll post some times up tonight!

Rach Atherton wins at Vallnord World Cup!

GREAT news - Rach just took the top spot at the World Cup with a storming run....

Top 3 is:
Rach Atherton
Sabrinna Jonnier
Florin Pugin

Storming run from Rach knocking Sabrinna straight outta the hot seat... "smoked her" as Warner said. Just waiting for the boys to start rolling.

Lock on to http://www.freecaster.tv/live/1000006_1004544 for live coverage.
